INCLUSIVE CULTURE INITIATIVE AWARD
Belgrave Neighbourhood Co-operative Housing Association (BNCHA) is the UK’s largest tenant-led housing co-operative, managing nearly 400 homes in Leicester. Rooted in co-operative values of democracy and shared ownership, BNCHA has undergone a remarkable transformation, emerging from crisis to become a beacon of inclusive, tenant-driven leadership. Today, residents are not just tenants but decision-makers, shaping governance and services that reflect their lived experience. BNCHA’s initiatives bring inclusion to life: the Belgrave Community Food Hub supports 200 families weekly; EKTA wellbeing sessions provide culturally sensitive support for vulnerable residents; and a thriving community garden fosters intergenerational connection. Its Active Membership Strategy ensures women, young people and under-represented groups have a voice in shaping the co-op’s future. Recognised nationally for inclusive governance, BNCHA proves that tenant-led housing can deliver secure homes, strong communities, and genuine belonging for all.
