The Pharmacy Department at Kingston University | Kingston upon Thames, UK
Inclusive Culture Initiative

The Pharmacy Department has undergone a significant cultural transformation, shaped by a commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI). With increased degree awarding gaps during the pandemic and reduced sense of belonging, through a sustained, evidence-based approach, we have embedded inclusive practice across our curriculum, staff development and student experience. We introduced a spiral inclusivity curriculum, cultural competence training and antiracism workshops that have strengthened belonging and improved awareness of health inequalities. Our staff have grown in confidence using inclusive language and designing representative learning materials, while students report raised awareness of cultural biases and increased sense of belonging, and metrics show a reduced degree awarding gap. This collective effort has been recognised nationally, with two Chemist & Druggist Diversity and Inclusion Awards and a Gold level Green Impact Award for education for sustainable development.
