Elmley Dray School | Kent, UK
Diversity Teams
Elmley Dray School is a new specialist provision that has quickly established itself as a nurturing, inclusive, and ambitious environment for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities across Kent. Although the school has only been open for 18 months, it has already made a significant impact by building a culture where diversity, dignity, and belonging are embedded into everyday practice.
From the very beginning, Elmley Dray School was created with a clear vision: to ensure that every pupil is recognised as an individual with strengths, potential, and a voice that deserves to be heard. The school supports learners with a wide range of needs and has worked hard to create an environment where pupils feel safe, respected, and empowered to succeed both academically and personally.
Starting a new school has brought challenges, including establishing systems, building trust with families, developing an inclusive curriculum, and meeting the increasingly complex needs of pupils from across Kent. However, these challenges have driven innovation and collaboration. In just 18 months, the team has developed a strong reputation for creating meaningful opportunities for all learners, regardless of their communication needs, learning differences, or backgrounds.
One of Elmley Dray School’s greatest achievements has been the creation of a truly inclusive culture from the ground up. Diversity is reflected throughout the curriculum, school environment, and daily interactions. Staff are committed to ensuring that pupils see themselves represented, celebrated, and valued. The school has prioritised accessible communication, inclusive relationships education, emotional wellbeing, and pupil voice, ensuring that every learner can participate fully in school life.
The team has also developed bespoke approaches for SEND learners, creating accessible and differentiated learning experiences that help pupils understand identity, relationships, respect, equality, and community. This work has already had a positive impact on pupils’ confidence, self-expression, and understanding of diversity.
In a short space of time, Elmley Dray School has built strong relationships with families, professionals, and the wider community, becoming a place where inclusion is not simply a policy, but a lived experience. The nomination for the Diversity Teams Award at the Inclusive Awards 2026 recognises the passion, dedication, and vision of a team determined to create lasting change for young people across Kent.
