Diversity Teams
I joined SFCT in 2022 through the Charityworks graduate programme, a partnership to bring greater diversity into the organisation. Starting in a People Support role, I never expected how much I would learn from being part of SFCT's DEI journey. I helped formalise the DEI Network, supported the first cross-organisational DEI Action Plan, and began writing reflections for awareness days, which gradually encouraged more colleagues to share their own experiences, cultures and perspectives. As I progressed into a Learning and Inclusion Officer role after my graduate programme, I had the opportunity to support our first gender and ethnicity pay gap analysis in 2023, helping to understand where inequalities existed and how data could drive meaningful action. Since then, I have had an opportunity to contribute to expanding this work to include disability and social mobility. Another important milestone in the organisation has been co-designing our mandatory DEI learning with colleagues across the organisation, ensuring it reflected lived experiences, gave staff practical tools to challenge microaggressions, and created space for honest conversations. Starting in the non-profit sector as a young woman from the Global South, it has been important to bring nuance, and I have learnt to listen first and recognise that meaningful cultural change happens through patience, trust and relationships.
