Liverpool Women's Anti-Racism Hub | Liverpool, UK
Diversity Teams

At the start of 2024, The national Maternity and Newborn Safety Investigation team issued the Trust with a report of concern; identifying cultural/ racial bias was one of the contributing factors that led to 2 of the maternal deaths. This point onwards, the Trust has been committed to addressing these events with the care and services it provides through an improvement programme approach of education, awareness raising, reflective learning with our patients and community, employment initiatives and change in clinical practice. As a result, this is where the Anti-Racism Hub was created. Since May 2024, we have diligently fulfilled our roles to advance the outlined Anti-Racism initiatives i.e Addressing racial disparities within practice, Provide education and training for staff on recognising racial health disparities, support staff through culturally competent resources, inclusive events and safe spaces, Attend and Host community engagements and Developing training programmes to ensure recruitment processes are inclusive and addressing biases in hiring practices And Much More!

Through their work leading and implementing the Anti-Racism Action Plan, they have delivered meaningful and measurable improvements that have enhanced the experiences of both staff and patients from diverse backgrounds.
What makes this team particularly outstanding is their ability to translate the principles of diversity and inclusion into practical action. Their work has addressed critical gaps in clinical education, patient care, staff wellbeing, and organisational policy. Rather than focusing on symbolic commitments, they have implemented initiatives that directly tackle systemic inequalities within healthcare. These projects demonstrate a deep understanding that structural racism and inequity can affect many aspects of healthcare delivery, including diagnosis, communication, staff progression, and access to services.
They have also introduced systems to collect and analyse anonymous staff feedback, allowing the organisation to identify patterns or trends in workplace concerns.
By creating structures that enable staff to raise issues safely, the team has strengthened organisational accountability and promoted a culture of openness and trust.
Equally important is the team’s work to improve the workplace experience for staff from diverse backgrounds. They have advocated for practical changes that demonstrate respect for cultural diversity, such as sourcing inclusive scrub caps suitable for afro-textured hair and braids.
While this may seem like a small change, it represents a significant step toward creating an environment where all staff feel valued and respected.
The team has also supported fair and inclusive recruitment practices through the development of tools that help hiring managers identify and address bias in recruitment processes.
These initiatives contribute to greater equity in career opportunities and help ensure that diverse talent can progress within the organisation.
Perhaps the most impressive aspect of this team’s work is their ability to drive meaningful change despite limited resources. Through collaboration, persistence and a strong commitment to equity, they have implemented a wide range of initiatives that address both patient outcomes and staff experiences. Their work demonstrates that diversity and inclusion initiatives can deliver tangible improvements when they are supported by clear vision and dedicated leadership.
In summary, this team has shown outstanding dedication to advancing diversity, equity and inclusion across clinical practice, education, organisational policy and community engagement. Their work has improved patient safety, strengthened staff support systems and helped embed anti-racism principles throughout the organisation. Most importantly, they have created initiatives that will continue to benefit staff and patients long into the future.
