I am the chair of the British Transport Police Sikh Association, i set this up 6 months from transferring from another force. This was a way to mark the force in a correct way. there was no Sikh association for my Sikh colleagues so i decided to start it off by scratch now i have a executive team to help me. I have been successful on putting on events in the force to promote faith in the police especially of the Sikh faith and what it means. But i also have done events that are though provoking such as the Identity event that touched upon racism on the force and beyond and how we can make the right changes. I have set up the Sikh Internal Comms page where we share all the work we are doing. We held Vaisakhi at the square that attracted over 40,000 people. We held events on Honour Based Violence and Forced Marriages. I am now doing one on mental health in policing. I am working on a stop & search video on the Kirpan issue where officers will now how to handle a situation if it arose.
I have been working on the religious festivals aspect in the force and how we can promote this collectively as i am advocate in supporting the other faith networks i have helped other associations launch too. I also helped launching the National Sikh police Association nearly 6 years ago now and we have other forces that launched their association and i have been able to be a guide to this. I am looking at all stations at BTP to have a college of policing article of faith for any Sikh arrests and how they need to be managed. I have also put BTP on the map due to being invited to events that show what i have done in the community. I set up two BME forums at my old force of West Midlands Police, one was the Force Contact Centre a place where colleagues from a ethnic background could share their issues. I also set up the first Diversity soundboard in the Forensic department.
I am part of the UN and a ambassador for True Honour a honour based and forced marriage charity
I will be awarded my honourary doctorates in June for being my community work and being a trailblazer in the community.
