As the Diversity and Inclusion team at BBC Cymru Wales, we have worked to drive meaningful organisational change by embedding Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging (DI&B) into every part of the business. Working as a small team and often as the sole dedicated DI&B resource, we have focused on building collective accountability, ensuring that inclusion is not owned by one person but championed across the organisation.

Our work has been shaped by our own lived experiences and a commitment to creating opportunities for those who have historically faced barriers to entering, progressing and thriving within the workplace. Working collaboratively with colleagues from across the organisation, we have helped transform outreach and engagement across Wales, increasing our visibility within underrepresented communities and inspiring future talent through authentic, lived-experience-led engagement.

We have led and supported a range of impactful initiatives, including the creation of the Pathways career development programme for Working Class and Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic colleagues, providing mentorship, leadership development and progression opportunities. We have also delivered inclusive events that foster belonging, including an Iftar celebration that brought Muslim communities and BBC staff together and the Pink Portraits project with Iris Prize Film Festival, celebrating the identities and experiences of LGBTQ+ colleagues.

Through this work, we have helped strengthen representation, develop talent pipelines, increase community engagement and contribute to a more inclusive culture where employees feel valued, supported and able to succeed. The achievement we are most proud of is helping to create sustainable cultural change by embedding Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging into everyday practice across BBC Cymru Wales.
