The Black Heritage Network (BHN) was established at BAE Systems on 1 October 2024 in response to a growing need for a dedicated space where Black employees could connect, feel represented and build a stronger sense of belonging. As the first network of its kind within the organisation, BHN was founded by Gwyneth Sotuminu and Yetty Bankole with a shared vision of creating a community that celebrates Black heritage while driving meaningful change across the business.
What began as a small group of approximately 25 members has rapidly grown into a thriving community of more than 200 employees across the UK. BHN exists to support, empower and amplify the voices of Black employees through networking, mentoring, professional development and open dialogue. The network also plays a vital role in fostering allyship, creating opportunities for colleagues and leaders to better understand the lived experiences of Black employees and become active advocates for inclusion.
The launch event, held across Preston, London and online, set the tone for the network’s purpose and impact. Employees shared powerful personal experiences of culture shock, microaggressions, isolation and underrepresentation, many for the first time. These conversations not only validated the experiences of Black employees but also inspired allies to become champions for change.
Since its launch, BHN has delivered a wide range of initiatives including networking events, mentoring opportunities, apprenticeship outreach, Black History Month activities and its flagship monthly Conscious Conversations. These sessions have explored topics such as mental health, sickle cell awareness, representation and career progression, providing a platform for learning, discussion and community building. The network regularly attracts between 30 and 50 attendees per event, achieves an average event satisfaction score of 96.6%, and 90% of attendees report that participation has improved their sense of belonging.
BHN’s impact extends beyond the organisation through partnerships with Black Minds Matter, the Sickle Cell Society and Black Trail Runners, helping to raise awareness of issues affecting Black communities while supporting charitable and community-focused initiatives. The network has also engaged with organisations such as UK Black Business Week, Black Tech Fest and AFBE, creating opportunities for knowledge sharing, talent attraction and professional development.
The network has become an influential voice for inclusion within BAE Systems, securing Executive Committee sponsorship and supporting initiatives such as reverse mentoring, increased representation among Mental Health First Aiders and promotion of SELF-ID participation. By creating visibility, encouraging courageous conversations and building meaningful connections, BHN has helped transform inclusion from a corporate aspiration into a lived experience.
Today, BHN stands as a powerful example of what can be achieved when employees come together with a shared purpose. Through community, allyship and advocacy, the network is helping to build a workplace where Black employees feel seen, heard, valued and empowered to succeed, while creating sustainable cultural change that benefits the wider organisation and community.
