The Hive Thanet CIC | Ramsgate, UK

The Hive Thanet CIC was founded with a clear and powerful mission: to provide a safe, inclusive, and welcoming space for the entire SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) community. Situated in Ramsgate—an area ranked among the most deprived in the UK—The Hive is committed to transforming lives by improving social mobility and creating accessible opportunities for all, regardless of ability, background, or circumstance.

The organisation has established a state-of-the-art, fully accessible centre set on five acres of land. As both a community hub and project space, The Hive places inclusion, accessibility, and empowerment at its core. It works to dismantle the barriers faced by individuals with SEND and those who are NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training), ensuring they can fully participate in society and build meaningful futures.

Key Projects Driving Social Mobility

1. Inclusive Sports and Physical Activity –
The Hive offers a diverse programme of accessible and adaptive sports that promote physical wellbeing, confidence, and community:

Accessible cycling sessions for all SEND community members in a safe, supportive setting.

Home ground for Thanet Galaxy, a pan-disability football team welcoming players of all abilities.

Inclusive rugby in partnership with Thanet Wanderers, encouraging teamwork and physical literacy.

Accessible belly dancing classes promoting fitness, joy, and self-expression.

Boccia sessions with Thanet Thunderers, tailored for individuals with physical disabilities.

Weekday inclusive sports in partnership with Inclusive Sport, offering adapted games that build coordination, confidence, and friendship.

2. Tackling Isolation Through Intergenerational Support –
The Hive addresses the critical issue of isolation, especially among older adults, through a variety of social and creative activities:

Dedicated workshops for those aged 55+, focused on connection, creativity, and lifelong learning.

Sessions to develop new skills and rediscover hobbies in a supportive environment.

Horticulture sessions for local SEND students, encouraging nature-based learning and community bonds.

3. Employment Pathways and Traineeships –
Launched most recently, The Hive’s Traineeship Programme provides a vital bridge into employment for individuals with SEND and NEET young people. This tailored initiative includes:

Individualised job coaching and skills development.

Real work placements with local businesses.

A structured, supportive environment to nurture confidence, independence, and employability.

This programme reflects The Hive’s belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to contribute, earn, and thrive—regardless of ability or background.

Community-Driven, Co-Produced Change –
At the heart of The Hive’s success is its commitment to grassroots, community-led work. The centre collaborates closely with families, carers, educators, local authority, health professionals, and local employers to ensure that services are responsive and relevant. Many of its programmes are co-produced, shaped directly by those who use them, making The Hive a trusted anchor in Ramsgate for families often excluded from mainstream provision.

Championing Social Mobility in Thanet –
In a region facing entrenched unemployment, poverty, and health inequalities, The Hive Thanet is a beacon of hope and progress. Through inclusive sport, social engagement, and vocational training, The Hive is not only meeting urgent needs, it is actively changing life trajectories. Every project is underpinned by the belief that inclusion is not a one-size-fits-all solution; it requires compassion, adaptability, and innovation.

The Hive Thanet exemplifies what it means to build sustainable pathways to independence, community participation, and economic opportunity
