The Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Directorate at The University of Manchester is a dedicated team of 12 full-time staff, a Data Analyst intern and three academic leads for EDI, specialising in Disability, Sex and Sexuality and Race and Religion. The directorate serves around 12,000 staff and over 45,000 students. The EDI team was elevated to a Directorate in August 2021 under the leadership of Banji Adewumi MBE. It is now led by a new Executive Director of EDI, Sarah Fox.
The Directorate includes an Executive Director, a Data Analyst, four EDI Partners, a Chartermark Coordinator, Project Manager and other supporting staff. Each EDI Partner is responsible for one of the university’s three faculties: Biology, Medicine and Health; Science and Engineering; and Humanities. They work with Professional Service Directorates, staff networks, and cultural institutions to embed EDI principles across the university.
The Executive Director sets strategic priorities and ensures the implementation of EDI initiatives. The Data Analyst supports evidence-based decision-making through data collection and analysis. EDI Partners liaise with their faculties to identify needs and develop tailored strategies for equality, diversity, and inclusion. The Chartermark Coordinator manages the university’s participation in EDI charter marks and awards.
Since becoming a Directorate, the EDI team has launched initiatives to foster an inclusive environment, including training programs, policy development, and diversity events. Their efforts are crucial in creating a supportive and equitable community for all staff and students.
The EDI Directorate’s commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion is evident in its comprehensive approach and positive impact on the university community. Through collaboration, data-driven strategies, and dedicated leadership, the directorate continues to advance its mission of fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for everyone.
