The University of Manchester Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Directorate

The Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Directorate is a specialist team dedicated to creating a more equitable, inclusive and accessible University where every individual feels valued and knows that they matter. Established as an independent directorate in 2021, the team provides strategic leadership, expertise and practical support to advance equality, diversity, inclusion and mattering across the institution.

Working in partnership with faculties, professional services, the Students’ Union, staff networks and external organisations, the Directorate supports colleagues to embed inclusive practices into every aspect of University life. The team leads and enables work across a broad range of priorities including equality impact assessment, accessibility, race equity, gender equality, disability inclusion, LGBTQ+ inclusion, faith inclusion, inclusive leadership and organisational culture change.

The Directorate is currently developing a new University-wide EDI Framework, due to launch later in 2026, which will provide a shared approach to advancing equality, diversity, inclusion and mattering across the institution. Developed collaboratively with colleagues from across the University, the framework will help ensure that inclusion is embedded within everyday decision-making, leadership and culture.

Alongside this work, the Directorate is helping shape and support the delivery of Manchester 2035, ensuring that equality, diversity, inclusion and mattering are woven throughout the University’s ambitions for education, research, innovation, people and social responsibility. Through partnership working and evidence-informed practice, the team helps ensure that inclusion is not a standalone activity but an integral part of how the University delivers excellence and creates positive impact.

As the University enters its third century, the EDI Directorate continues to champion an environment where diversity is valued, barriers are removed, opportunities are equitable and everyone has the opportunity to contribute, thrive and know that they matter.
