Women Empowering Defence (WED) is a pioneering organisation dedicated to advancing the roles and contributions of women in the Defence and Security sector. Founded in 2023, WED has emerged as a transformative force, breaking barriers, fostering inclusion, and championing the rights and capabilities of women across the Defence Enterprise. Our journey is a testament to resilience, innovation, and the collective power of women united by a common cause.
Women Empowering Defence was born out of the recognition that women in the Defence and Security sector faced significant challenges, including underrepresentation, bias, and limited opportunities for advancement. Our mission is to empower women through education, advocacy, mentorship, and leadership development. We aim to create an inclusive defence environment where women can thrive, lead, and contribute to national and global security.
The inception of WED was met with both enthusiasm and skepticism. We embarked on our mission at a time when the Defence and Security sector was predominantly male-dominated, and gender equality was not a priority for many institutions. Despite these challenges, we were determined to make a difference. Our early milestones included the establishment of workshops programmes, the creation of our interview series highlighting influential women and male allies across the sector, and the organisation of our annual conference aimed at empowering women across defence.
One of our first significant achievements was the successful delivery of our annual “Women Empowering Defence” Conference which provided hands on training and mentorship to women aspiring to leadership roles. This Conference welcomed over 650 attendees from across the Enterprise focusing on magnetic confidence, perfectionism in leadership, the importance of make allies and Unleashing your own superpower.

The ‘Step into Leadership Programme’ is a transformative initiative designed for professionals poised to embark on their leadership journey. This comprehensive programme equips participants with essential skills, knowledge, and confidence required to excel in leadership roles.
Participants will undergo a series of workshops focusing on critical areas such as strategic thinking, effective communication, decision-making, and team management. Each participant is grouped in a cohort supported by experienced leaders who provide personalised guidance, feedback, and support throughout the programme. The programme facilitates connections with industry leaders and peers, fostering a supportive community and opening doors to new opportunities. Each participant will gain a deep understanding of what it takes to lead effectively, including strategic planning, conflict resolution, and motivational techniques as well as equip themselves with the credentials and skills that can significantly boost career prospects and open pathways to higher-level positions.
The Step into Leadership Programme is an invaluable stepping stone for professionals eager to step into impactful leadership roles, driving both their career advancement and organisational success.
Our community has enabled experienced professionals with aspiring women across the sector. Through group workshops, and networking events, we have created a supportive community that fosters personal and professional growth.
Our journey has not been without obstacles. The entrenched biases and systemic barriers in the defence sector presented significant challenges. However, these challenges only strengthened our resolve. We have learned to navigate and dismantle these barriers through persistence, collaboration, and innovative strategies. Our efforts have resulted in increased awareness, greater representation of women in leadership roles, and a more inclusive culture within the defence and security community.
As we look to the future, Women Empowering Defence remains committed to our mission of empowering women in the Defence and Security sector. We envision a world where gender parity is not just an aspiration but a reality. Our future initiatives include expanding our leadership programs, launching new leadership development courses, and increasing our advocacy efforts to ensure that the voices of women in defense are heard and valued.
