REACH Project

REACH2026 Shortlisted nominee
Inclusive Culture Initiative

The Race Ethnicity and Cultural Heritage (REACH) team is a staff‑led movement across Greater Manchester Mental Health Trust committed to tackling racism, supporting affected staff and building a culturally competent, anti‑racist organisation. Born from urgent challenges at Meadowbrook and Safire Ward, REACH has transformed inconsistent reporting, low morale and rising incidents into structured, compassionate and practical action. The initiative has introduced police liaison support, clear reporting pathways, tailored staff wellbeing packages, flexible working options, psychological debriefs and mutual expectations guidance for patients. Now a Community of Practice spanning 9 teams across inpatient and community services, and joined by external trusts, REACH has created safer environments, stronger teams and a shared commitment to confronting racism directly. REACH is redefining what inclusive culture looks like in mental health settings by turning staff voices into systemic change.
