Changemaker: My Journey in Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI)
My path to becoming a passionate EDI advocate began with personal experiences that sparked a lifelong commitment to building a more just world. My early education in 1980s Liverpool, where inclusion meant blending in, stood in stark contrast to the vibrant and multicultural environment I encountered in Zambia. This opened my eyes to the complexities of inclusion, realising it goes far deeper than just skin colour.
In Zambia, I may have unknowingly experienced privilege as an expat child. However, this later realisation, coupled with exposure to diverse role models, developed a deep understanding of inclusion’s multifaceted nature. The contrasting educational systems in both countries highlighted the importance of diverse voices and experiences in shaping a well-rounded education.
Building Inclusive Futures: Leading in Education and Beyond
Today, as the EDI Lead at Beaconsfield High School (BHS), I strive to cultivate an environment where every student feels valued and prepared for the globalised world. My vision goes beyond quotas; I aim to embed EDI into the very core of the school. This means a diverse staff, a globally-focused curriculum, and a culture that celebrates differences.
My impact extends far beyond BHS. I served as a school governor for over a decade, co-founded the non-profit ASIM to empower girls and women, and currently serve as an Ambassador for the Hunger Project – all testaments to my commitment to social justice.
A Legacy of Championing Fairness
My professional experience reflects my dedication to equity. From my work as an EDI Officer at the Home Office to roles as a lecturer, work coach, and schools advisor, I have consistently championed fairness in education and employment. My extensive experience as a senior lecturer, personal tutor, and equality and diversity coordinator, combined with freelance work as an EDI trainer and consultant, positions me as a leading expert in the field.
Beyond the Profession: A Force for Positive Change
My passion for EDI is not confined to professional boundaries. I actively raise awareness about global hunger and advocate for educational access in underprivileged communities. My faith motivates me to contribute as a former catechist.
As a blogger, speaker, and conference organiser, I share my expertise and inspire others. I do this through published articles, engaging workshops, and, most recently, by organising an EDI conference at BHS.
A Powerful Voice for a More Just World
I am a powerful voice for EDI. My dedication permeates every aspect of my life, inspiring positive change in education, social justice, and beyond.
